On Margate Sands
A day trip to Margate offered an opportunity to visit the Turner Contemporary Museum and spend a few hours on the coast. The Tourism literature naturally made much of Turner's comment that "the skies over Thanet are the loveliest in all Europe,” but I was surprised to step off the train and be greeted by a mural featuring T.S. Eliot's reference to Margate in The Wasteland:
On Margate sands.
I can connect
Nothing with nothing.
I had these quotations rumbling around in my mind throughout the day as I made a number of in-camera multiple exposure images. I featured the sky, but on a bleak October day the feeling had more to do with Eliot than Turner.
